Monuments and places of interest
Castle: on the western part of the town there is the castle of Moniga, a very well preserved late Romanesque structure. The castle was never inhabited by a lord but was a place of refuge for the Monigani in cases of danger. Having never been inhabited by a nobleman, it was never attacked thus managing to maintain its original appearance. Church of San Martino: The parish church is dedicated to San Martino. In ancient times it was a chapel that depended on the parish church of Manerba. On 13 October 1454 it was consecrated by Bishop Ermolao Barbaro and dedicated to the patron saint of the military, a cult introduced by the Franks. Madonna della Neve Church: The church dedicated to the miracle that took place in Rome on the Esquiline hill on 5 August 352 is in Romanesque style and was built during the 16th century and is listed in the records of the pastoral visit of Bishop Gian Matteo Giberti from the second half of the 16th century. Moniga del Garda : The origin of the name of Moniga del Garda is not certain. In a first hypothesis it is connected to the Como Lomaniga (in the apheresis form), which would derive from Lumena to which the suffix “-ica” should be added. The second hypothesis indicates that it derives from the Latin ammonius. The town is nicknamed “Città del Chiaretto” from the name of the typical rosé wine, characteristic of the Valtenesi, obtained from the Groppello vine grapes through a particular fermentation in rosé. Since June 2008, the national review of rosé wines “Italia in Rosa” has been organized in Moniga. Also important is the local production of Extra Virgin Olive Oil DOP Garda, a Protected Designation of Origin product.
