Monuments and places of interest :
Vittoriale degli Italiani, monumental citadel built on the shores of Lake Garda as the home of the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio, who lived there from 1921 to 1938. It was designed by the architect Giancarlo Maroni and since 1925 it has been a national monument, a destination of interest for tourists and Not. Il Vittoriale extends for about nine hectares on the hills of Gardone Riviera in a panoramic position overlooking the lake. The monumental entrance welcomes the visitor consisting of a pair of arches in the center of which is a fountain bearing in bronze letters a passage from the Secret Book, the last work written by Gabriele d’Annunzio: «Inside this triple circle of walls, where already translated into living stones is that religious book which I thought was in charge of the rites of the homeland and of the Latin victors called Il Vittoriale». The fountain is surmounted by a pair of cornucopias and a tympanum with D’Annunzio’s famous motto “I have what I have given”. From the entrance arches a double path winds its way: the first slightly uphill leads to the prioria, the house-museum of Gabriele d’Annunzio, and still climbing to the military ship Puglia and the mausoleum of heroes with the poet’s tomb; the second leads to the gardens, the arengo, and, through a series of terraces sloping down towards the lake, you reach the lemon house and orchard. After passing the entrance and taking the road towards the prioria, you come across the Piave pillar with the sculpture of the chained Victory by the sculptor Arrigo Minerbi, the Pilo of Giving in a pitcher, that is to hit the mark, hit the mark. On the left is the Parlaggio, the amphitheater designed by Maroni between 1931 and 1938, whose work was only completed in 1953, however, leaving it unfinished. Inspired by the theaters of classical times, and in particular by that of Pompeii where Maroni was sent on a mission together with the sculptor Renato Brozzi, according to the client’s indications he had to use slabs of red Verona marble to cover the raw materials of “modernity”. such as reinforced concrete, used for the stalls and bleachers. The structure remained in this poor state due to lack of funds, until the actual completion of the work which took place in March 2020 and was inaugurated in July. The amphitheater enjoys a view of the lake having as its natural setting Mount Baldo, the island of Garda, the fortress of Manerba in which the German poet Goethe thought he recognized Dante’s profile and the peninsula of Sirmione.
