Salò, monuments and places of interest: Religious architecture The Salò Cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria Annunziata, represents the most valuable architectural work, designed by Filippo delle Vacche in the late Gothic style, but never fully completed. Inside, it houses paintings by Romanino, Moretto, Zenone Veronese, and Paolo Veneziano. Antonio Vassilacchi, known as Aliense, painted several frescoes, while the high altar features an imposing gilded altarpiece containing ten wooden statues by Pietro Bussolo. The façade, which is still incomplete, was later embellished with the marble portal created by Tamagnino and Gasparo Cairano in 1509. The monumental cemetery, built on the opposite shore of the gulf, designed by Rodolfo Vantini. Civil architecture: The Palazzo del Podestà, once the seat of the council of the Magnifica Patria, now houses the municipality. Part of the building is a reconstruction after 1901, the year in which a terrible earthquake brought the city to its knees. The 15th-century Palazzo Fantoni housed the Athenaeum of Salò, a branch of the ancient Accademia degli Unanimi. The civic theater, now under renovation following a long period of abandonment. The Palazzo Terzi-Martinengo in Barbarano was built on the orders of the Marquis Sforza Pallavicino, captain of the Republic of Venice. It has a large park with beautiful fountains. The palace is privately owned and therefore not open to visitors. The lazaretto of San Rocco, built following a resolution of the General Council dated June 7, 1484. Natural areas: The Municipality of Salò is the most densely populated and the most inhabited in the Alto Garda Bresciano park. Mount San Bartolomeo, which overlooks the city, is crisscrossed by nature and landscape trails leading up to its summit, which is currently being renovated following a long period of abandonment. The Terzi-Martinengo palace in Barbarano was built on behalf of the Marquis Sforza Pallavicino, captain of the Republic of Venice.
