Monuments and places of interest:
Vittoriale degli Italiani, a monumental citadel built on the shores of Lake Garda as the home of the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio, who lived there from 1921 to 1938. Designed by architect Giancarlo Maroni, it has been a national monument since 1925, a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. The Vittoriale extends over approximately nine hectares on the hills of Gardone Riviera in a panoramic position overlooking the lake.

Visitors are welcomed by a monumental entrance consisting of a pair of arches, at the center of which is a fountain bearing in bronze letters a passage from the Libro segreto, Gabriele d’Annunzio’s last work: “Within this triple circle of walls, where that religious book which I thought was dedicated to the rites of the homeland and of the Latin victors, called Il Vittoriale, has already been translated into living stone.” Topping the fountain are a pair of cornucopias and a tympanum with D’Annunzio’s famous motto, “I have what I have donated.”

From the entrance arches, a dual route unfolds: the first, a slight incline, leads to the priory, Gabriele d’Annunzio’s house-museum, and further up to the warship Puglia and the heroes’ mausoleum with the poet’s tomb; the second leads to the gardens, the arengo, and, through a series of terraces sloping down towards the lake, reaches the lemon house and the orchard. Once past the entrance and taking the road towards the priory, you come across the Piave pillar with the sculpture of Chained Victory by the sculptor Arrigo Minerbi, the Pilo del Dare in brocca.
