Monuments and places of interest:
Church of Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles in Toscolano Maderno: Basilica of Sant’Andrea, 12th-century Romanesque architecture. Gonzaga Palace, 17th century. Bulgheroni Palace, 17th century. Supina Sanctuary. Toscolano Maderno Botanical Garden. Toscolano Maderno Paper Museum. History: Since the Lombard era, the area was part of the court of the Monastery of San Colombano, the Priory of Bardolino, and the Priory of Solarolo (Manerba del Garda), dependent on the Abbey of San Colombano in Bobbio (PC), and the large monastic fiefdom of Bobbio. The monks evangelized the area, encouraging the expansion of trade, agriculture (especially vines and olives), fishing, and culture, introducing important innovations and opening trade routes. Toscolano, in particular, boasts Roman origins, as evidenced by the remains of a large villa, of which parts of a mosaic-decorated floor can still be seen today. This villa was thought to have been owned by the Roman consul Marcus Nonius Macrino. The parish church of Toscolano, founded in 1571 and dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, was for a long time the summer residence of the Diocese of Brescia. It contains an important cycle of paintings by the Venetian artist Andrea Celesti. The final stretch of the Toscolano River valley saw the development of the paper industry starting in the 14th century, one of the first and most important in Europe. For this reason, this stretch of valley is known as the “Paper Mill Valley.” Evidence of this exists in a document dated October 17, 1381, which concerns the agreement between the municipalities of Maderno and Toscolano (then separated), which established nine rules for the division and use of the river’s waters. The Supina Sanctuary, built in the late 15th century, stands on the land known as Supina.
